One of the things I try to impart to my therapy clients is that no matter what is going on in their lives, they can experience peace and serenity. I know this from personal experience. Personal experience with my own healing journey – beginning with psychotherapy, then joining a Twelve Step Program many years ago, conversion to the Catholic Faith at the age of 39 and my continuing, ongoing journey in the Faith.
Healing personal wounds from family hurts, marriage difficulties, death of loved ones, trauma, anxiety and depression is a journey that many people chose to avoid. It’s not easy. It hurts. It can seem fruitless when you’re in the middle of it. Sometimes it feels endless.
Once we’ve entered the healing process, it’s not uncommon to expect relief, change, happiness and joy.
When immediate relief eludes us, as it sometimes does, we can feel angry and let down. The healing process is a spiritual one. Bill Wilson (co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous) in an article written in 1957, calls the healing journey a “spiritual awakening”. As we clear away the debris left from the hurts, struggles, wounds and losses, we come to see God more clearly. When we begin to see God more clearly, we can see ourselves more clearly as well. Eventually we begin to see ourselves as the person God created us to be, more clearly. When our view of ourselves and of God is unobstructed, we can experience peace.
If more gifts are to be received, our awakening has to go on. As it does go on, we find that bit by bit we can discard “the old life” – the one that did not work for a “new life” that can and does work under any conditions whatsoever.
Regardless of worldly success or failure, regardless of pain or joy, regardless of sickness or health or even of death itself, a new life of endless possibilities can be lived if we are willing to continue our awakening . . .
– Bill Wilson –
In the midst of suffering we may not be able to see the end, but if we stay close to God, we can have a life of endless possibilities right there in the midst of it.
