As women, many of us have experienced feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and the fear of judgment. Whether it’s in our personal or professional lives, these emotions can hold us back, feeding into the imposter syndrome that whispers, “You’re not enough.” But what if we could find a way to let go of these fears and trust in something greater?
The Surrender Novena, a nine-day prayer of release and trust, has become a powerful tool for many women to overcome these limiting beliefs. In my coaching practice, I’ve seen firsthand how this novena can transform the way my clients approach their fears, especially when it comes to feeling inadequate or afraid of stepping out of their comfort zones.
A Lawyer’s Fear of Networking
One of my clients, a successful lawyer named Sarah, had an intense fear of networking. Despite her impressive accomplishments, she often felt like she didn’t belong in rooms with other attorneys. The thought of introducing herself or speaking about her work at professional events made her anxious. She worried that she wasn’t polished enough, or that she wouldn’t be taken seriously.
When Sarah came to me, we began incorporating the Surrender Novena into her routine. Each day, she prayed the words: “O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything.” At first, she found it hard to believe that surrendering her fears would make a difference. But over time, she began to feel a shift. By praying for God to take care of her anxieties about networking, she was able to release some of the pressure she had placed on herself.
At a large legal conference, Sarah had an opportunity to test this new approach. Instead of worrying about impressing others, she focused on being present and trusting that God was guiding her through the situation. That night, she connected with a senior partner who offered her advice and encouragement. For Sarah, this experience wasn’t just about networking—it was about seeing that she didn’t have to strive for perfection. Her worth wasn’t dependent on how others saw her, but in trusting that God had placed her exactly where she was meant to be.
A Bookkeeper’s Journey to Speaking Up
Another client, Emily, a skilled bookkeeper, struggled with imposter syndrome. She excelled in her work but often found herself paralyzed with fear during client meetings. Emily hesitated to ask questions or offer suggestions, worried that her clients would judge her or think she was less knowledgeable. This lack of confidence caused her to hold back, even when she knew she had valuable insights to offer.
When Emily shared this with me, I suggested she try using the Surrender Novena as part of her daily practice. Each morning, she began her day with the prayer: “Take care of everything.” As she continued the novena, Emily noticed a growing sense of peace. She realized that her fear of judgment wasn’t serving her or her clients. By surrendering the need for approval, she gave herself permission to speak up.
At her next client meeting, Emily felt the familiar rush of fear but reminded herself of the prayer. Instead of shrinking back, she asked the questions she needed answers to and made suggestions with confidence. Her clients not only responded well but began relying on her insights even more. For Emily, the novena helped her see that her voice mattered—and that God was guiding her through these moments of fear.
Incorporating the Surrender Novena in Coaching
The Surrender Novena has become a key part of how I work with clients facing fear and imposter syndrome. In our sessions, I often encourage clients to start their day with this prayer as a way to release control and trust in God’s plan. Whether they’re anxious about speaking in public, making important decisions, or dealing with self-doubt, the novena serves as a reminder that they don’t have to face these challenges alone.
By making surrender a daily practice, clients like Sarah and Emily are able to break through the barriers of fear that have held them back. It’s not about ignoring their responsibilities or goals but about acknowledging that they don’t have to do it all in their own strength. As women, we are often conditioned to believe that we have to prove ourselves, but the novena teaches us to trust in God’s timing and provision.
Surrendering Fear and Finding Freedom
Incorporating the Surrender Novena into coaching helps my clients not only overcome fear but step into their roles with confidence. It’s a powerful reminder that we are enough just as we are—and that with God’s help, we can face any challenge. Whether it’s a fear of networking, speaking up, or feeling like an imposter, surrendering those anxieties allows us to walk in the freedom that comes from trusting God.
So, if you’re struggling with inadequacy, low self-esteem, or the fear of judgment, I encourage you to give the Surrender Novena a try. Start each day by praying, “O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything,” and watch how your mindset shifts. As you let go of the need to control and perform, you’ll find that God’s grace fills in the gaps—and that you are already more than enough.
