The newest revelations of covering up sexual abuse within the Catholic Church and her hierarchy has sent shock waves throughout the Church. The Grand Jury in Pennsylvania also investigated similar abuse in other institutions as well, but the primary focus is on the Catholic Church’s crimes. Many have been deeply troubled by the lopsided coverage. And yet, it exemplifies one very important point. The fact is the Catholic Church IS held to a higher standard. And the point missed is the Catholic Church, by her nature as God’s divinely founded institution, should be held to this higher standard.
Let’s face it, this could not have happened on such a great scale without the complicity of many of our bishops. Many chancery officials were involved in the cover-ups and made decisions to move offending priests to other parishes. This betrayal of trust by those in the most powerful moral position imaginable is appalling and cannot be tolerated or condoned.
So, how should Catholics deal with the emotional fall out of these and other events and the frustration and anger that comes in its wake?
Allison Ricciardi, LMHC provides insights and encouragement for those deeply wounded and torn between where to turn next regarding the deeply troubling assertions of betrayal by the Church’s hierarchy and how to move through in their faith.
