While walking down the street one day, a kind man smiled warmly at me and gently pressed a small figurine of Jesus into my hand. “Everybody needs a little Jesus,” he said.
His words were well-intentioned, even sweet. But as I turned them over in my heart, they revealed a sobering truth: how easily we’ve reduced Jesus to a sentimental symbol—a tiny token of comfort, a pocket-sized Savior we keep around “just in case.”
In our culture, we often want Jesus to stay little. Small enough to soothe our anxieties, but not big enough to disrupt our routines. We want a Jesus who will comfort our guilt, but not call us to holiness. One who welcomes us, but doesn’t challenge us. We want the healer, not the King.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me,” Jesus declares (Matthew 28:18). He is not part of your life. He is your life. Or He is nothing at all.
So no, not everyone needs “a little Jesus.” We need the fullness of Christ—gentle and just, compassionate and crowned, Savior and sovereign.
He doesn’t fit in our hand. He holds us in His.
