Guarding Against Being a Bully after Victimization

by | Jun 22, 2016 | Counseling

We hear a lot about bullying these days and well we should. Bullying can do deep damage that can stay with someone well into adulthood. It needs to be addressed and it’s heartening to see increased public awareness of the topic. Sadly though, bullying incidents seem to be more frequent today with the many new electronic avenues that have brought bullying out of the school yard and right into one’s pocket, thanks the miracle of cellular technology. Surprisingly, many bullies themselves feel powerless in their lives and attacking someone weaker may make them feel stronger and more in control. It’s real hard to sympathize though when you’re the victim of one of these menaces.

There are many kinds of bullies out there, both in the schoolyard and beyond. Some victims never recover. They accept the label smeared on by the bully: victim. Their identity is shaped by this title. You have to wonder why so many people accept it. There certainly seems to be no upside for them. After all, who would want to be a victim? And that’s where new troubles can start. In my piece, When Victims Become Bullies we look at how identifying as a victim can leave you vulnerable to becoming a bully as well.
