Coaching is all about helping you explore hopes, dreams, and goals for the future. Sometimes people come into coaching not knowing exactly what to expect. There are many different types of coaches and not everyone coaches the same way, but overall, you can expect three stages: agreement, exploration, and action.
The agreement stage is where you narrow down what to focus on during the session. Sometimes you know exactly what you need to do and other times, the coach helps you get there by asking questions to get a more specific focus.
Coming prepared for coaching will help you find your focus more quickly and get the most out of the session as a whole. Before the session, write down a list of things you want to discuss and consider which one is most important. Think carefully about what you have to rejoice about. What action steps have you been working diligently on? What progress have you made? What have you accomplished since the last session? These are your Wins and are great to share with your coach at the beginning of the session.
Once the agreement is made for the session, the exploration begins. During this stage, your coach will ask questions to help you get a big picture view of what it could be like if you attained what you want. They will also ask if you see any obstacles preventing your success. Other questions will explore more in depth how you think and feel about what you are exploring. If you’re working on your Clifton strengths, for example, the coach might ask what struck you as you read over the strength and how you can apply that to a situation at hand. As you go through the exploration of the focused topic, some action steps may begin to form in your mind.
Towards the end of the session, in the action phase, your coach will help you clarify your goals and identify what steps you will take to achieve the stated goal. Coaches are not there to tell you what to do, but to guide you toward understanding it for yourself. It happens organically after the exploration is finished and there is more clarity. Between coaching sessions, you are busy with the action steps you set up.
Coaching is an excellent means of exploring your life and setting meaningful, achievable goals. It will help you become who God wants you to be and live the life God wants you to live.
